Urdu is national language of Pakistan but it is equally understand and spoken in all parts of India and Bangladesh. that means Urdu is understood by 250 million people (150 Million Indians + 50 Million Pakistanis and same by Bangladeshi people ( Approximately ).
Urdu is the 3rd most popular language in the world after Arabic and English. Urdu is national language of pakistan.

Urdu 's Origin

Urdu is actually a mixture of sanskrit ( an old indian language ) , Arabic and persian Languages. Urdu contains many words from English as well. So actually its a mixture of different languages. Urdu was formed within the Army mess of that time. Army men from different excents and cultures when came across each other and started to live together in army barraks, there evolved another great languages , which is now called URDU.
Urdu on internet.
Well, there is not much done about bringing urdu over to internet. Urdu can't run directory on webpage, so either you need to make it an image or you need to use UNICODE which requires to install specific font. however work is being done to promote urdu over internet.
